Statewide Efforts

Advancing K-16 computer science (CS) education in a state is a complex and collaborative endeavor. CS education state summits are an important part of this process and can help to develop and advance a state’s strategy for expanding CS education access. In particular, summits can democratize change by giving voice to all stakeholders in a collaborative and action oriented environment.

Florida CS Education State Summit

On November 14, 2023, CS Everyone hosted the inaugural Florida Computer Science Education Summit at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The summit provided a platform to convene and inspire individuals committed to driving change in the state, encompassing representatives from colleges and universities, schools and districts, community stakeholders, and nonprofit organizations. Dedicated to the shared goal of formulating a state strategic plan for CS education, discussions, panel sessions, and presentations were centered on key themes such as teacher preparation, K-16 computer science education pathways, and the creation and implementation of data dashboards.

Sponsorship and Support

This event was sponsored by CS Everyone: Kenneth C. Griffin Computer Science Education for All Initiative, alongside support from the CSTA Miami and Palm Beach chapters. The summit’s planning committee was composed of allies in computer science education from the following organizations:

Guided by the expertise of ECEP staff, this summit aligned with their proven model for states convening to expand access to computing education and foster broader participation in the field.

Representation

Representatives from nine school districts participated, including the four of the largest in the state: Miami-Dade, Broward County, Orange County, and Palm Beach. NEFEC, representing smaller districts across North Central Florida, was also present. Faculty members from five Florida-based universities and colleges, hailing from both Colleges of Education and CS departments, contributed to the diverse and collaborative atmosphere.

Next Steps

Post-summit, the excitement generated and conversations initiated that day will continue, with attendees forming dedicated working groups to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive state strategic plan for computer science education in Florida.

Landscape Report

A landscape report offers a detailed snapshot of the current state of CS education within a state. It identifies where and how CS courses are being taught, highlights disparities in access among different regions and demographics, and uncovers gaps and opportunities in the education system. This comprehensive analysis equips stakeholders with the necessary data to make informed, strategic decisions aimed at expanding and improving access to CS education for all students.

State Plan

A state plan for CS education establishes a strategic roadmap for advancing CS education statewide. It sets clear goals and outlines actionable steps to achieve them, aligning efforts across educators, policymakers, industry partners, and community organizations. The state plan fosters collaboration, secures commitment from stakeholders, and guides the allocation of resources. By doing so, it ensures coordinated actions toward expanding high-quality CS education access for all and preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce.

Quarterly Calls

Between the annual CS education summits, quarterly calls are held to sustain momentum and ensure progress on shared goals. These calls focus on updating stakeholders about developments, gathering input, and collaboratively addressing challenges related to expanding CS education. They also provide valuable time for networking and sharing opportunities among educators, fostering a supportive community that promotes resource sharing and professional growth. Our goal is for participants to stay engaged and aligned, collectively advancing access to comprehensive CS education for all.
